The Launch: One Conversation Before They Leave for College

Every summer, thousands of families pack up cars, move their teen into a dorm, say goodbye in a parking lot, and drive home in silence. And somewhere on that drive, the same thought surfaces for a lot of parents: did we say everything we needed to say?
Most of the time, there were conversations they wanted to have and never got to. Not for lack of love, but for lack of a starting point.
The college transition is a significant season for a family that is full of change. There is often so much focus on the practical side, whether it's the applications, the finances, the logistics, but the relational and emotional side often gets missed entirely. What does my teen actually need from me right now? What do they expect us to handle and what are they planning to handle on their own? What happens when things get hard and they do not know how to reach out to me?
These are the conversations that shape how the first year of college really goes. Most families mean to have them. Life just gets in the way.
That is why we created The Launch Plan.
The Launch Plan is a practical tool designed for parents and teens navigating this season together. Each person fills out their own version, reflecting honestly on where they stand across six areas of college life, everything from academics and finances to communication, mental health, and how to signal when things feel off. The plan includes a guide on how to come together, compare what you each wrote, and have the conversation that changes how this transition goes for everyone.
If your teen is heading to college this fall, what would it look like to sit down together this week and have this conversation? There is still time to have this conversation before they go.
